The first meeting of the new SARCS Regional Scientific Committee was held November 15-16, 2001 hosted by the newly relocated SARCS Secretariat at the National Central Unive rs i t y, Chungli, Taiwan. The meeting focused on the integration of cur rent and future projects, identifying research gaps in the region, and preparing for the suite of new Sustainable Development Indicators projects. Participants discussed efforts to improve the transition of scientific results into the policy realm and proposed a number of flexible strategies that can be utilized by principal investigators to enhance this transition. New Personal Ms. Diana Ip has joined SARCS as the Interim Program Manager, replacing Ms.Connie Chiang.
Anisio Teixeira 19831, in an outstanding paper, showed the contradictions between declared and existing values in Brazilian educational institutions. The distance between those values was deemedas resulting in great part from the Brazilian historical background, where colonization imposed external cultural standards, thus leading to imitation, copying and simulation of situations for adjusting them to the expected behaviors. Therefore, the legal organization of education, if reviewed without enough knowledge about reality, leads to an optimistic impression, barely corresponding to what is effectively practiced in schools. This gap between what is declared and what is practiced is not exclusive to Brazil, nor to education. In by far the greatest part of religious literature, for example, has concerned itself for thousands of years about the ritualism of the followers, thus losing the spiritual focus that should stimulate them. That is why the New Testament states that one may strain out the flies, but swallow camels. It is much easier to state sublime values, which inspire and even animate people at the speech level, than practicing them through example. It is more attractive to establish rules coherent one to another, in the formal stage, than trying to have them accomplished in reality. Similarly, international treaties, rules, declarations and guidelines express horizons and ideals to be achieved, the lack of which would lead to a spiritually poor life. Nevertheless, that is why they are very often seen as something that is not achievable in daily practice. It is clear that, similarly to national normative systems, those documents may be used for manipulating symbols, causing the false impression that one is trying to show reality better than it is in fact. It is possibleto turn rules into something which one dreams about but does not pursues, resulting in the distancing of the reality from the ideal. Nevertheless, it would be very demeaning if rules and guidelines were fully adjusted to what exists, thus having no distance between what is and what should be. In that case, it would be necessary for everyone to be fully satisfied with the present and willing for the future to be exactly like the present. This is very unlikely in face of historical precedent!

The purpose of this study was to determine whether postprandial lipemia contributes to the dyslipidemia observed in HIV-positive patients taking antiretroviral therapy. Methods and Results--A standardized fat load was administered to 65 subjects group 1 35 HIV-positive subjects receiving protease inhibitors [PIs]; group 2 20 HIV-positive subjects not receiving PIs; group 3 10 HIV-negative controls ; . Serum triglycerides, retinyl palmitate, and lipoproteins were measured using enzymatic and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. Compared with HIV-negative controls, peak postprandial retinyl palmitate and large very low-density lipoprotein VLDL ; levels occurred later in both HIV-positive groups, and a delayed decrease in serum triglycerides was observed. However, postprandial areas under the curve AUCs ; for triglycerides, retinyl palmitate, chylomicrons, and large VLDL were similar. Postprandial AUCs for intermediate-density lipoproteins IDLs ; and low-density lipoproteins LDLs ; were higher in group 1 than groups 2 and 3 all P 0.035 ; . Conclusions--Postprandial clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins is delayed in HIV-positive individuals receiving antiretroviral therapy. An Empirical Investigation of Consumer Purchases and Intertemporal Pricing of Retailers' Extended Service Contracts" Issue: When Do Consumers Purchase ESCs? Methodology: Optimal Stopping Problem This paper examines consumers' purchases of Extended Service Contracts ESCs ; and products along the product lifecycle in the electronics market. ESCs are important to electronics retailers since they contribute to half of the profit. A Prior study on why consumers buy ESCs finds expected replacement cost, uncertainty, the price of ESC, and risk attitude are important factors in ESC purchase decision. The decision is indeed dynamic since most of the above mentioned factors are changing along the product lifecycle. It is interesting to investigate how consumers' ESC purchase decision changes over time. Our results also provide insights for retailers to design dynamic pricing strategies for ESCs. We model a forward-looking consumer's joint decisions on product purchase timing and ESC purchase to analyze the intertemporal purchase pattern. Previous literature on durable product adoption shows that consumers are strategic in deciding when to buy a product. They form expectations of future prices and consider the tradeoff between consumption utilities and prices. ESCs impact this strategic tradeoff for a forwardlooking risk-averse consumer and thus impact the product purchase timing. This is the first paper to study how consumers make ESC purchase decisions along the product lifecycle. In particular, we explore the following questions: 1 ; How is the timing of consumer product adoption interrelated with ESC purchases? 2 ; How are the joint decisions driven by the speed of the decline in a product's future price? 3 ; As a percentage of the product price, is the current ESC pricing policy in line with the consumer dynamics? A unique dataset on consumer electronics product and ESC purchases enables us to answer these questions. We build a dynamic structural model in the optimal stopping framework. We demonstrate how the product adoption timing and ESC purchase affect each other. We use simulation to show the impact of different ESC price paths on ESC purchases. Basel, 30 January 1998 Tasmar, first in a new class of Parkinson's Drugs, receives Clearance in the United States Tasmar tolcapone ; , a new compound developed by Roche for the treatment of Parkinson's Disease, received approval by the US Food and Drug Administration FDA. Tasmar, the first of a new class of drugs called COMTinhibitors, will be available for patients in the United States in late February. As a COMT inhibitor, Tasmar enhances the therapeutic activity of levodopa, the current gold standard in Parkinson's disease treatment, resulting in better symptom control. Tasmar was already approved in 1997 in the European Union, Canada and Switzerland. Tasmar is currently available in more than ten countries. Parkinson's Disease is a progressive neurological disorder with debilitating symptoms that affects approximately 1 in 100 people over the age of 65 years. Parkinson's Disease arises from a progressive degeneration of cells in the brain responsible for the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine. This causes various symptoms including uncontrollable tremor or shaking, slowness of movements bradykinesia ; , poor balance, stiffness and a shuffling walk.
