INTRODUCTION The processes of follicular rupture during ovulation and of acute inflammatory reaction share many common attributes [reviewed in 1, 2]. Both processes are associated with synthesis of eicosanoids [3, 4]; the action of proteinases and inhibitors [5, 6]; involvement of other mediators such as platelet-activating factor [7], bradykinins [8] and histamine [9]; and marked vascular changes. LH hCG stimulation of ovulation causes an increase in ovarian blood flow accompanied by vasodilation [10], an increase in vascular permeability [11], and infiltration of blood cells into the pericapillary stroma [12]. These vascular changes are reminiscent of those of an inflammatory response and render the follicle edematous [13]. In morphological studies of periovulatory ovine follicles, the migration of neutrophils and eosinophils out of the vascular compartment as well as masses of extravasated blood in thecal tissue with numerous platelets adhering to damaged vascular endothelium were observed around the time of ovulation [12]. Mast cells have been reported to accumulate in the medulla and cortex of the rat ovary on proestrus [14].
