The aim of the present study was to test the efficacy of topiramate and levetiracetam vs placebo in a double blind project, observing the effects of the three treatments on the alpha band synchronization pattern induced by photic stimulation. 2. Methods 2.1. Subjects Forty-five migraine without aura outpatients MO ; Headache Classification Committee, 2004 ; , ages 1849 37.86 12.35 ; , 10 males and 35 females, eligible for migraine prophylaxis Lipton et al., 2006 ; , were selected and randomly assigned to a daily assumption of 100 mg topiramate BD, 1000 mg levetiracetam BD or placebo treatment. For one patient assuming placebo, two patients were randomly assigned to topiramate or levetiracetam. This was a double-blind, controlled study. The study design provided recordings in a pain-free state before T0 ; and after 2 months treatment T1 ; . We also selected 24 non-migraine healthy subjects 17 F ; , aged 1848 mean age 35.2 5.56 ; , for EEG evaluation. All selected subjects were free from any psychoactive drugs, except for the assigned treatment, and none of them suffered from general, neurological and psychiatric diseases, according to DSM IV 1994 ; . The study was approved by the Ethic Committee of the Bari Policlinico General Hospital, and the subjects gave their informed consent before selection. The frequency of headache average number of days with headache month, in the previous 2 months ; was checked in all cases at T0 and T1 times. The univariate ANOVA with the type of treatment the condition before and after the treatment ; as factors and the frequency of headache as dependent variable was employed. The percentage rate between the frequency of headache before and after treatment was further computed and the effects of the three treatments were tested by ANOVA and post-hoc Bonferroni test. We then used the Spearman test to correlate the percentage variations of headache frequency and phase synchronization induced by the drugs. 2.2. Recordings The EEG was recorded by 19 channels, according to the 1020 International System. Critical hydrophobic residues i the putative apical n domain of Cct6p also correspond to regions corresponding tb the peptide binding and peptide release regions of GroEL: Certain, but not all, hydrophobic residues in Cct6p from the putative apical domain also showed interesting correlation to regions critical for GroEL function. Two cold-sensitive alleles, cct6-70 F251K ; and cct6-71 L262E ; , reside adjacent to the two critical charged regions of Cct6p corresponding to regions implicated in peptidebinding in GroELas noted above Table 4; Figures 4 and 9 ; . Furthermore, another cold-sensitiveallele, cct6-56 L213D ; , resided in a region corresponding to an extended loop structural element implicated in peptide binding. This extended loop is locatedjust underneath thetwo peptide binding a-helical structural elementsin GroEL region I, Figure 8 ; . However, L213 appeared to be the only critical residue from this putative extended loop of Cct6p see below ; . Another region of Cct6p that contained critical hydrophobic residues maps to a region of GroEL near the topsurface of inside face implicated in GroES binding and peptide release region I in Figure 8 ; .
